On December 31th 2023, Fluorchem will officially end the production of all four products within the cosmetic chemicals production line, putting an end to a year long production run. We began producing cosmetic products on 31 December 2022.
During our time in production, we produced thousands of kilograms of cosmetic chemicals including dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, phenoxyethanol, ethyl acrylate and ethyl methacrylate.
The production of acrylates and siloxanes was initiated by the Fluorochemical Operations of Fluorchem Corporation in March and April 2022 as research was being done involving the possible use of acrylates and siloxanes as a formulation substitute for fluorochemical water repellent products in applications where fluorochemicals are not seen as favourable. During the research programme, the cosmetic chemical units were operated as long as they were profitable to produce cosmetic chemicals for sale to the health and personal care and sexual wellness industries before concluding operations in December 2023.
Production of Ethyl acrylate and Ethyl methacrylate at Fluorchem sold the majority of our product to China to produce many products for the health and personal care industries. Both Ethyl acrylate and methacrylate have major applications in the cosmetics industry for the production of artificial nail products including adhesives and lacquers. Acrylates are used to give nail products stronger adhesive and a glossy protective finish.
Production of polydimethylsiloxane (dimethicone) and cyclopentasiloxane sold the majority of our product to China for the production of many products for the health and personal care, sexual wellness, and healthcare industries. Dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are key components in the manufacturing of many cosmetic products including lotion, foundation, tanning lotion, eyeliner, lip gloss, sunscreen, eye-shadow, personal lubricants and many more products. Siloxanes are used in these products such as lotion, tanning creams and sunscreen to provide a smoother application on the skin forming a barrier that protects against moisture and leaving the applied product with a silky smooth texture.
Fluorchem Corporation Fluorochemical Operations is ending production of cosmetic chemicals at its six production units due to a number of factors mainly being the opportunity to increase profits by constructing larger bleach production units.
Fluorchem Corporation operates a total of six chemical production units apart of cosmetics chemical production. These units are known within Fluorchem as PLV-5, PLV-6, PLV-12, PLV-14, PLV-15 and PLV-16 (seen pictured on the left as seen in 2022). All six units were built in 2022 for the purpose of operating within the cosmetic chemicals programme of Fluorchem. The production of acrylates has one production unit, siloxanes has three units, and phenoxyethanol has two units. These units were highly successful with the siloxane and phenoxyethanol units producing hundreds of litres of product volume between March and April 2023.
In September and October 2023 after an internal review on sales of product coming from the cosmetics units it was determined that profits could be increased by allocating facilities inside the machine which formerly housed the cosmetics units to contain bleach production units which was producing greater profits than cosmetic chemical sales.
All six units shutdown for the final time shortly after 3:00 AM on 31 December 2023.
We thank you, our customers, for choosing Fluorchem Cosmetic Chemicals during our time of production. The next time you put on makeup, apply moisturizing lotion or sunscreen, use a personal lubricant, or put on artificial nails, there's a chance the chemicals within these products could be from our production units. We hope you continue to enjoy our new product lines.
